Collocated Hertfordshire facility will support global design firm’s 10,000 employees and 3,000 CAD users, enhancing resilience and efficiency.
Leading business communications provider Vtesse today announced that its subsidiary, Vtesse Cirrus, has been selected by Arup to provide colocated data centre services based at its Tier III+ facility in Hertfordshire. The global design engineering firm will migrate its existing operations, comprising more than 500 pieces of equipment, from Arup’s West London headquarters to Vtesse Cirrus’ Hoddesdon data centre over a three month period.
As a multidisciplinary design engineering firm, Arup works with high profile clients across a range of industry sectors including aviation, energy and buildings, delivering innovative and sustainable designs that shape a better built environment. The company is also renowned for designing highly energy efficient data centres – Citigroup’s Citi Frankfurt facility is a flagship site and the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum data centre worldwide.
To support continued business growth Arup needed to upgrade its existing data centre facilities, but was facing significant refurbishment costs to overhaul the existing space. As an alternative, Arup’s IT team evaluated five data centre providers based within London and outside the M25, but was concerned about application performance for its resource intensive CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) users if application servers were not accessible close by.
In order to dispel these performance degradation concerns, Vtesse conducted a Proof of Concept (POC) which involved recreating the 60km distance between Arup’s West London office and Vtesse Cirrus’ Hoddesdon facility with a spool of fibre. Throughout the extensive testing process, Arup’s IT team continually phased in different numbers of users. By the third and final week the whole London campus was working over a connection provisioned by Vtesse, with no deterioration in performance detected.
Maintaining performance quality was absolutely vital if we were to consider moving our data centre operations from in-house to an external location – particularly one located outside of London, Vtesse offers us reliable connectivity and a comprehensive end-to-end communications service that Arup needs to function on a global scale. Many providers are too rigid when it comes to data centre services, but Vtesse was completely flexible and working closely with our team to ensure design requirements were tailored to specifically meet Arup’s business needs. – Dave Thomas, Head of IT UKMEA Region at Arup
The colocated suite will consist of 40 server racks and storage, an estimated Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.5, and resilient high bandwidth data connections to various Arup sites in the UK over Vtesse’s national fibre-optic network. The diverse gigabit links also perform a disaster recovery function, ensuring that Arup does not experience downtime.
Arup has been a communications customer of Vtesse for more than four years and we are delighted that we have been able to extend our existing relationship to provide data centre services on a long-term basis, many organisations are still sceptical when it comes to relocating outside of their data centre comfort zone. It is deployments like this that prove there is much to be gained, both operationally and financially.- Aidan Paul, CEO at Vtesse.
